A Brief Introduction

Hello! As you’ve likely surmised, I am in the process of writing a novel entitled The Keys of Illath. It is a cross-genre journey that draws from the realms of fantasy, science-fiction, action-adventure, unsolved mystery, martial arts, epic romance, spiritual exploration and magical possibilities – all while (hopefully!) transcending the expected forms and attempting to arrive at an entirely new understanding of who we are, and what we’re capable of.

This is a story that has been growing in me for a while now. I’ve always been a writer. I wrote my first novel in the eighth grade, and while I found it immensely cool, it probably isn’t of much interest to anyone beyond a 12-year-old boy. Since then, as I’ve grown and built my own understanding and experience of the world, I’ve felt another story waiting to be told, a bigger story, an important story. It has been gestating for a long time.

And then everything changed. This past August I married my wonderful wife Chani, and we decided to make a huge break from our lives in Seattle and move to Budapest to teach English. As it turns out, English tutors are not in particularly high demand here, and we found ourselves with ample time on our hands. I don’t know what it is about this city… Maybe because it’s been home to so many geniuses, or because it’s been at the crossroads of cultures for two thousand years… Whatever it is, I suddenly found the voice to start telling this story.

This blog will be the main public display for that work. I will publish chapters as they are written, which is a daunting and nerve-wracking prospect, but I feel called to share this work as a process, not just a finished product. We are all far more connected than we usually think, and I feel that this work is about bringing those connections to light through fun, engaging, thought-provoking mythic fiction. In that spirit, I want it open and available to any and all who care to read it!

Inspiration comes in strange ways… and I think transparency is the key. I want to be as transparent as possible in this work.

The prologue and the first few chapters will be available soon, with many more to follow!

Thank you, as always, for your support.
